Laughlin is an unincorporated Clark County resort town on the Colorado River, across from Bullhead City, Arizona. Clients from Laughlin and the surrounding tri-state area can pledge luxury watches, jewelry, gold and other high-value assets through this platform.
Laughlin is an unincorporated community in Clark County, Nevada, at the far southern tip of the state. It sits on the west bank of the Colorado River, downstream from Davis Dam and Lake Mohave, and directly across the water from Bullhead City, Arizona. Las Vegas is roughly 90 miles to the north, which is close enough for a day trip and far enough that Laughlin runs as its own small market rather than a suburb.
The town carries the name of Don Laughlin, a Minnesota native who had owned the 101 Club in Las Vegas. In 1964 he flew over this stretch of river, saw its potential as a resort, and bought a shuttered riverfront motel. That property became the Riverside Resort. When a postal inspector needed a name for the local post office, Laughlin suggested "Riverside" or "Casino"; the inspector chose "Laughlin" instead, and the name stuck.
Before the casinos, the site was known as South Pointe. In the 1940s it was a motel and bar serving miners, fishermen and the crews building Davis Dam. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation completed Davis Dam in 1951, and the dam still forms Lake Mohave just upriver. Once construction ended, most of the workers left and the settlement nearly disappeared, until the Riverside opened in the 1960s.
Growth came in waves. More hotel-casinos opened through the 1980s, and Don Laughlin paid for the Laughlin Bridge across the Colorado to Bullhead City in 1987, then donated it to the states of Nevada and Arizona. The Flamingo Hilton, now the Aquarius Casino Resort, followed in 1990. Today Casino Drive is lined with resort properties, and Visit Laughlin describes the town as home to eight casino resorts.
Laughlin has no city hall. Clark County describes it as an unincorporated town governed by the County Commission, which takes advice from the elected Laughlin Town Advisory Board. Residents have voted on becoming a city, and a 2012 referendum on incorporation was rejected. For anyone comparing local businesses, that means county rules apply here rather than a separate city licensing layer, and a borrower should not expect city-level consumer rules that do not exist.
The local economy turns on tourism and on the hydroelectric output of Davis Dam, according to Clark County. The tri-state area around the river, including Bullhead City, Needles in California and Fort Mohave in Arizona, draws year-round residents, retirees and seasonal visitors. Many people in a market like this hold value in things they can carry: a luxury watch, signed jewelry, gold coins or bullion. Those assets can be pledged for a short-term loan without being sold.
